Chrysler has been the recipient of some of the most negative press in the auto industry for the past few years due to the lack of innovation and slumping sales.  However they may be making a comeback in the tech industry with the launch of their UConnect Web service they are unveiling this Thursday.  This service will finally bring the web to your car, so now I will be able to post articles while I navigate the 880 on my way home (scary, I know).  Wired broke this story last night, below is an excerpt with some details from Doug Newcomb:

” ‘In today’s market, Chrysler’s mission is to bring innovation to market more quickly,’ Chrysler Vice President Frank Klegon says.  Chrysler says UConnect Web uses cellular and WiFi technology to provide “instant access” to the internet. Anyone in the car will be able to check e-mail, download music, play games and even upload photos from an SD card directly to Flickr. Chrysler says any wireless device and “all major gaming systems” will work with UConnect.”

This may be the key to Chrysler reconnecting with the increasingly tech savvy consumers who are looking to stay fully connected 24/7.  I know that when it’s time for me to buy my next car and I have the option to purchase an auto that I can have Internet access on, it’s a no brainer for me.  But don’t cash in your Revver earnings (joke!) quite yet, the service will not be available until sometime next year.  But you can be sure I will be one of the first people in line.

Awesome! I’ve been keenly interested in this new emerging technology since I’ve first watched it on foxnews channel. I’m seeing a great potential for this technology which can probably drive Chrysler’s sales for 2009. Also, I’m predicting this will be the trend and most other car companies will follow suit and would not dare leave themselves behind on this.

I’m carefully watching the developments from here on and I’ve actually started a blog dedicated to this as well.
