We hear a lot about different companies entering the “cloud” space, however there is very little movement from the video technologies as of yet.  However it appears that all of that might be changing with Encoding.com’s new business model.  You remember Encoding.com, right?  They were the one’s you mailed your videos into and they encoded them into their servers and then allowed you to distribute them.  Well it sounds like they just heard about Youtube and realized that using the mail for online video services has now joined the ranks of the pony express.  So now they have re-branded themselves as a SaaS (software as a service) video encoding company that allows for a dynamic, multi platform enterprise solution.

And in talking with a couple from one of the more prominent online video platforms this weekend, I was actually surprised to find that they believed that Encoding.com may actually be hitting the sweet spot of the market.  These two executives wished to remain anonymous due to their firm’s interest in this sector of the market.  However they said that encoding is being taken for granted since the focus has been 100% on the delivery mechanisms, CDN’s, etc.  However they said that there are very few companies that can perform dynamic encoding for third parties on a cross platform basis.  One of the current market leaders in this niche is Ripcode.  And since Encoding.com promotes that their services allow you to distribute content to:

  • Flash
  • iPods
  • Mobile Devices
  • PSP’s

It may seem that they could resurrect their business and turn into the leader of the encoding niche.  The only question I have is, what took you so long?

Yes, they encode into Flash which can then be sent over your corporate CDN, directly into your player. Ripcode also performs the same service (for both mobile and web), however they can encode on the fly. Which means they can take the same video file and distribute it to any major platform quickly and easily. The more research I do, the more I think that Ripcode is far superior to Encode.com. On2 is also doing some exciting things,

Difference between Ripcode (which is a nice product) and encoding.com is the price model, Ripcode is a $47,000 peice of hardware that you need to install in your own data center. Encoding.com is a pay as you go service at 0.25 per 100MB. From my research encoding.com’s API can do everything that Ripcode’s can. Not sure I understand Garrison’s comment Ripcode can “encode on the fly” as a differentiator that is exactly what encoding.com does.
